On June 17, 1972 Frank Willis a security guard at the Watergate complex; in Washington D.C. was the first to notice activity of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The police were called, and five burglars were apprehended; Virgilio Gonzalez, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martinez, and Frank Sturgis, and charged with attempted burglary, attempted interception of telephone and other communications. On September 15, 1972, the grand jury indicted the five men plus two others E. Howard Hunt Jr., and also G. Gordon Libby for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws. Once the information was revealed to the media of the break-in; the nature of this scandal, with the media coverage became a very powerful force in the United States. The United States government could not be trusted to report the full story; the media became a tool of democracy the coverage of is said to have led to the movement of partisanship in the media. Americans viewed the Watergate scandal as a disgrace to the United States government; media outlets filled the airway with the unknown truths behind the White house fabrications of the Watergate cover up. “In the first days of Nixon administration the rats were like those of any other city, visible only by night and then just in the alleys. About the time of the Cambodian invasion they grew more populous and emboldened enough to appear by day scuttling under cars and running across the streets. Now at the end of the term, with John Connally heading up the Democrats for Republicans Committee, they’re {sic} in the parks, not running but standing still contesting with the pigeons for dry crumbs.
