How Mandatory National Service Will Improve Our Country

Do you think that today’s youth do not have enough respect for their country or themselves? Have you ever thought that our country would be better off with mandatory conscription or civil service? While you might not have said yes to both questions, this essay will discuss how both of those can be related. Today’s young adults often have little respect for authority and themselves, but by being in a civil service they could learn about responsibility, as well as play an active role in their community, receive money for an education, and be less likely to be involved in youth crime.

Today’s youth are growing up in an society where it is okay to treat others with disrespect, and unfortunately many parents have no recourse for this behavior. The disrespect exhibited by youth can be attributed to a lack of activities that have positive influences on their actions. Civil service activities can help shape emotions and behaviors which help ensure the future success of the youth (Schneider-Munoz, 2009). Success of our youth is a prerequisite for the success of our country’s future.

After high school, and between the ages of 18-24, are usually the years young adults are either victims or perpetrators of crime. These youth crimes usually occur between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The majority of young adults only resort to crime when they lack income or opportunities (Yates, 2002). By requiring 1these young adults to perform civil or military service, they would be earning an income as well as benefits for college and thereby reducing the likelihood that they would engage in criminal activities. An effective approach for preventing violent behavior in our youth is community participation that involves decision-making and action.
