The Great Barrier Reef is an extremely well recognized biodiversity because of its size. Biodiversity is the variety of life forms that are needed to fill important spots in an ecosystem. Thousands of life forms depend on one another for survival. A change in one population could have detrimental effects on the remaining populations found within that ecosystem. As species die off the leave voids within the ecosystem. These voids can be filled by utilizing other life forms. (Bellwood, Hughes, Folke, & Nystrom, 2004)
A food chain is a diagram that demonstrates the flow of an energy source through an ecosystem. The main energy source for the Earth is the sun. The phytoplankton; a producer found within the ecosystem, produce energy-rich compounds by absorbing sunlight. This process is the first level of any food chain.
