Introduction

Life expectancy in the United States has improved quite significantly as seen in the last 100 years. In the several communities in New York City the average life expectancy is about an estimate of 79 years. This has significantly doubled to what is use to be in 1901. New York City is one the of the most racially and ethnically diverse cities in the country. The city is also economically diverse showing large gaps between those who have high income than compared to those with low. Income, race, or ethnicities are major factors that impact health disparities. The largest health disparities are seen to exist in New York City’s poorer areas. This diversity can be seen in all of New York City’s neighborhoods and communities. This health report will focus on the communities that make up the Queens County portion of the city. The report will try and target the Asian communities in the county to observe the certain health problems that are impacting the community.

Health Concerns Impacting Community

Some of the primary health issues that are seen in Asian communities in Queens County are similar to that of the general population in comparison to other communities in the city. General health issues that have impacted the community are obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure. The specific health issues that are prone to be seen in the Asian community of Queens County are heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and tuberculosis. The issues that is the root cause for most of these problems or health concerns are related to many South Asians not having access to health insurance or quality care. It has been reported that 1 out of 5 South Asians lack health insurance living in Queens County (SAALT, 2009).
