Introduction to Spread Spectrum Transmission

In the area of radio frequency transmissions, there are two main modulation techniques, they are narrowband transmission and spread spectrum. Focusing on spread spectrum there are many great benefits of using this modulation technique, more resistant to outside interference than its counterpart, and its low power requirements, makes spread spectrum the optimal modulation technique. “Whereas a narrowband transmission sends a strong signal using a small portion of the spectrum, spread spectrum transmits a weaker signal across a broader portion of the radio frequency band,”(Ciampa, 2013). This shows how the spread spectrum modulation is used in comparison to narrowband.

Several issues have been addresses in the creation of spread spectrum modulation, including lower power requirements, more information transmitted on the wireless device, and resistance to external distortion. All of these benefits are used to ensure optimal performance is attained by creating a smaller, wider scope, which over comes many of the limitations in the narrowband modulation. These improvements have been embraced by the wireless community, as the benefits that have been attained, the speed increase, and improved reliability are certainly well liked around the world.
