Internal and External Practitioner

1. Who are change leader

Change leaders are organization development practitioners. They may be internal or external consultant who provides professional services to organization clients. They will have common skills and experience in group dynamics and decision makings. ( George, J. M 2002 ) In modern organisations where there is highly competitive demands, OD professional will need to answer to concern for organizational effectiveness, competiveness and its strategic parts.

OD practitioners also include people that are specialising in reward systems, total quality management or business strategy. In view of internal organization development practitioner, it too applies to managers and administrators who have competence in OD and to them OD has become a general management skill.

2. External and Internal Practitioner

In any change occurring in an organization, a person or a group will be chosen to have the lead on the plan to change and this is normally the OD practitioner. And of course this OD practitioner in our case would be the change leader who will be leading and guiding the process of the change in the organization. A clear difference between the external and internal OD practitioner is that internal OD practitioners are those who practices OD within the organization department. Whereas external OD practitioners are those who are brought in from outside the organization as a consultant to perform its OD specialise for the organization. Both external and internal OD practitioner has its own advantage and disadvantage.

2.1 External Practitioner

The advantages of an external practitioner would be that since they are brought in from outside the organization, they are not associated with the organization’s system which is not necessary for them to rely on it and make it easier for them to work independently, gives them greater freedom of operation.
