In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet fate and destiny become a driving factor that twists the lives of those influenced, but the characters themselves with their own weaknesses contribute heavily to these flawed actions. Romeo and Juliet are the two characters that the story revolves around, and therefore become the center of influence for these disasterous characteristics. Their weaknesses are somewhat understood by their family members and their peers, whom they direct their attitudes towards decision-making. The climatic transitions of the story involve either the occurence of primary events, or the events that are to build and lead to these climatic events; the families and other characters surrounding the main characters are tied directly to their downfall. The conflict between the two main groups in the story is an example of the other characters' flaws, as they have created an invisible mental boundary that distinguishes and disturbs the peace. As the story continues, the various actions by the characters – both main and supporting – will bring consequent fuel to the existing fire. As such, the main characters and their supporting counterparts are all contributing factors to the tragedy as their existing conflicts are heightened and overwhelm the situation.

Romeo is a youthful young man who, past his immaturity, is characterized by his sensitivity and intelligence, and his interest in love. His flaws are from these characteristics, being that he is only subtly aware of the conflict between the families, and seeks only love. His pursuit towards Rosaline is one of the first descriptors of this love-ridden mind, as the obstacle that drives between the two devastates Romeo. The fact that she is from the rival family and that she chooses to remain celibate leaves him only the choice to stay afar.
