The Matrix

Written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski The Matrix is an excellent

science fiction movie with several increadabile fight scenes and amazing special effects.

The plot involves Neo (Keanu Reeves), a mild-mannered software author by day, a feared

hacker by night. He's recruited by a cell of cyber-rebels, led by profound Morpheus

(Laurence Fishburne) and the leather-clad warrior Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) (Ebert 1).

Morpheus sends Trinity out to find Neo because he believe Neo is "the one". Once Trinity

finds Neo she brings him back to Morpheus. They meet in Morpheus tells Neo that the

world he lives in is the matrix. The matrix is a computer-generated world in which the

people are living in a virtual reality. Intelligent machines have taken over the planet. As a

result of the war between humans and machines, the Earth is a sunless place in the throes

of what looks like a permanent nuclear winter. The machines had depended on solar

power, but now they have found an alternate source of energy: human beings themselves.

Human beings generate both heat and electricity, and the machines have found a way to

harvest both. To keep humans under control and to provide stimuli that enhance a body's

electrical output, the machines created The Matrix (Cavagna 2). After Morpheus explains

the matrix to Neo he then offers him a red or blue pill. If he choose the blue pill he would

just wake up and think everthing was just a dream. If Neo takes the red pill, he can "stay

in Wonderland" and learn "how deep the rabbit hole goes" (Cavagna 2). Meaning he will

join Morpheus and his crew on their quest to "[...] crack the framework that holds the

matrix in place, and free mankind" (Ebert 1). Neo chooses to take the red pill and thats

where his journey begins.

The Matrix has an underlyning christian theme. Morpheus constantly tells Neo

that he is "the one". He has been prophesied as the one who will crack the code...
