Janie is a single parent and has recently gone through a divorce. She has two children: Brian and Eve. Recently, Eve, who is 4, has begun refusing to go to her preschool and having bad dreams at night. Max is 10 years old. He seems to be doing OK at school but Janie isn’t sure.  You are a licensed clinical psychologist and Janie has come to you for help with Eve. She wants to know if there is something to worry about or whether the children’s behavior is normal. Your job is to describe how you will begin to work with your clients using clinical interview and assessment tools.

 

Create a brief response to each of the following questions:

 

1.      What other information would you like to learn during the interview with the family? What questions would you ask?

I would ask Eve to describe her day and tell me what her home time is like. I would need to know if she is happy or sad when she is at school. I would ask what happens just before her tantrums start to help understand why she acts out. I would ask if she liked her preschool at first. I would need to know if something changed at school to make her not like to go there. I would need to ask how she feels just prior to her misbehaving. I would need to know if she feels lonely. How long has the problem occurred? When and where did it begin? What else was happening around the time that the problem began? What are the sleep and eating changes? What is the relationship between the parents?

 

2.      In addition to the clinical interview, what specific clinical assessment tools are discussed in your textbook? Which would you use? Why?
