Disney Case Study
After three years of being open, Hong Kong Disneyland did not meet the expectations the other Disney’s had accomplished. Hong Kong Disney suffered from many internal and external causes that contributed to its downfall. Some of internal conflicts were the small size, inconvenient location, lack of unique features, insufficient appeal to adults and missing Chinese elements. Disneyland is known as a place where magic happens. The small size was also an external factor. Disney Hong Kong was only 311 acres, which is small compared to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which is 500 acres, and Walt Disney World, which is 30,080 acres. The Chinese are very adamant about their culture, so the fact that Hong Kong Disney did not incorporate those elements was a huge turnoff for people to want to visit this attraction. Another external factor was that Chinese parents often focused their attention on their children’s education, so their weekends weren’t just about having fun at a theme park, their weekends were filled with studying and tutoring. An internal factor was the price of admittance into the theme park. Housing costs were high so most of the Chinese had to work long hours. They believed that the entertainment options should be convenient and comfortable. The work conditions were also an internal and external factor. The park was also overcrowded and had a limited number of attractions.
There could have been many solutions that would have affected the outcome of Hong Kong Disney, but I don’t believe that coming from the Classical Theory viewpoint, there was many that could have affected the outcome. The Classical Theory believed that there is “one best way” to perform a task. I think that if the Disney Corporation did more research on the Chinese culture then they would have realized that they needed to focus more on the management of work and workers to help to solidify a stable work environment.
