Keeping in Motion

This past Monday, September 4th I attended the Keeping in Motion presentation in Tillman Hall. The speaker was Ms. Kim Alexander; I was not at all eager to participate in this activity. Therefore, I was extremely surprised when I not only found myself appreciating the presentation but at the same time actually enjoying it.

The speaker began with statistics pertaining to drunk driving and related crashes in the United States as well as in South Carolina alone. These numbers were not very surprising to me at all, most likely due to the fact that I had already heard them from a presentation I attended several months back. All the same, it saddened me to think that so many families are hurt and broken each year due to the negative effects of driving under the influence and not obeying the Seat Belt Safety Law.

Then, Ms. Alexander turned the presentation from a very impersonal viewpoint to a more personalized one when she began to tell the audience her story about drinking and driving. She is now a quadriplegic after surviving a car accident while riding with friends who were under the influence. She told of how her father told her in her younger years to never let anything hold her back that she was in control of where her life went. This reminded me of my own father, who has told me the same thing on several occasions. I was very disappointed to hear that she made a bad choice and that it now has severed consequences.

I can use Ms. Alexander’s story as a model of what not to do in my life. If I am to be in control of which direction my life is going, then I do not want to put myself in harm’s way and compromise that. I understand that as a Clemson University student that drinking underage is not tolerated in any way. I also do not plan on breaking this rule. If I am going to become a professional nurse then I will need to be able to make wise decisions and take responsibility for my actions. Keeping in Motion was a very good...
