The Role of Software in IT Systems

Module 2 – Session Long Project

Non-proprietary software that I frequently use would be a program called Frostwire. It is a free computer software program that allows free music downloads. This program runs on all computer platforms and it has been tied to an old program of the same type named Limewire. The software was developed by The Frostwire Project and was released in 2006. They also have Frostclick which is the Snow Leopard version of the program. In the past Limewire had several issues with viruses, people would download what they thought was music content but was actually a virus. Soon the content on this program became full of viruses and ultimately led to the closure and shutdown of the website.

Even though the program offers music videos and movie downloads as well, I only use it for music downloads. This software is in competition with programs like Apple’s iTunes. I prefer Frostwire over iTunes because it is free. Before I discovered Frostwire I was always downloading songs and albums from iTunes until I stepped back and saw just how much money I was spending on music downloads. That’s when I came across Frostwire, no need to spend any money and I can still get all the music downloads I want. So the obvious benefit to using a free program like this would be to save money, it definitely is for me!

Overall, I would recommend the software to anyone who pays for music, movie or video downloads. Since I started using Frostwire I haven’t had any issues with viruses. Like I stated earlier, I have saved a lot of money. Once I calculated the amount that I could have possibly spent on 118 paid downloads I was determined to find an alternate source to getting music.
