Managing Environmental Issues

The managing environmental issues simulation is an exercise on an individual’s beliefs on environmental issues. I am a Project Manager for the Kenya Agroforestry Research Department for the Kenyan government. I must work with Sharon Kruzan, Vice President for strategic planning of Colney & Pitts which is a California-based pharmaceutical company and the leading manufacturer of herbal remedies for prostate cancer, prostatis and other “old man’s diseases”, to create an agreement between the company and the Kikuyu tribe who are the people affected by the company’s plan of harvesting Prunus Africana, a tree used for the cure of malaria, chest pains, fevers and “old man’s diseases”.

Working with a specified budget from Colney and Pitts, my objective is to choose the best mix of measures that is agreeable to the company and with the best welfare for the tribe as well. The measures suggested by Colney and Pitts were to plant trees, relocate the natives, provide healthcare, provide training, and provide infrastructure. I initially chose planting trees, provide healthcare and provide infrastructure. My first choice is to plant trees. I knew that planting two trees for every de-barked tree harvested would be good for all parties concerned. Running out of trees to harvest is definitely not an option to everybody. I also chose to provide healthcare because the tribe’s use of Prunus Africana is not a cure to everything. Tribe people usually know local remedies for their illnesses but an introduction to new remedies could only help them, especially for some illnesses that tribe people do not have a cure for. I also wanted to provide the tribe training so that they can benefit both from learning the foreigner’s process and as financial compensation for their work.
