Process Selection & Design

Daily there are tasks performed by individuals that require the use of a process. The process required to complete the tasks could contain many steps and require minimal time or they could be complex and be time-consuming. The process performed daily that requires a reduction in time spent preparing for and commuting to work. Several factors could impact the amount of time required to arrive at the designated location. Using a flow chart design, the daily commute will be examined. According to Mind Tools, flow charts are diagrams showing how steps in a process fit together. “Flowcharts can therefore be used to define and analyze processes, build a step by step picture of the process for analysis, discussion, or communication, and define, standardize or find areas for improvement in a process”. (MindTools) The flow chart will be designed using an appropriate tool. In this paper, the flow chart will provide comments on factors affecting the flow chart design and identify metrics to measure the process.

The process that has been selected to review is preparing and commuting to work. Daily several tasks occur to prepare for work and during the commute to work. The flow chart design was created using Microsoft Word. The flow chart designed is illustrated by the following: start and end shapes are represented by oval shapes. Parallelogram is used for processing steps 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14. Decision steps involved in steps 3, 7, and 12 is represented by a diamond shape. The arrow shape is used to make a connection between the flow chart design and shows the flow of the process. The metric used as a measurement will be time involved in getting prepared for work and the time to drive to the destination. According to the text, cycle time is the average time between completion of units. (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). The...
