Self-Diagnostic Essay
There are always things in the world we do not know about. Such things might be facts about places, objects, or people. We learn about the aforementioned things by reading books on the topics or watching presentations by people on these topics. For the communications class, my informative speech was about a musician Fifty Cent, and how he rose from the bottom of society to the top. Informative speeches are judged on three criteria which are the clarity with which the info is communicated, if the information is communicated clearly, and if the info is made meaningful and interesting to the audience. The main weakness of my informative speech was the clarity of the information communicated.
It is important for an informative speech to be delivered clearly so that the audience listening to the speaker sees him/her as credible. For my speech, my clarity faltered in several areas. For example, my movements took away from the credibility of my speech. One specific movement in particular was the fidgeting with my notes. While I knew the information I was talking about clearly, this was not evident to the audience because I had to play around with my notes at times. Another element which took away from the clarity of my speech was my eye contact. At times in my speech, I looked down at my notes and not directly at my audience. This takes away from the clarity of my speech because it did not get my point across clearly enough.
In conclusion, for my next speech I should focus on my delivery. A speech is better received by an audience that sees the speaker with confidence. While the information I had was in-depth and accurate, the delivery of my speech did not confirm so. Lastly, I need to calm down while delivering a speech and be confident in my abilities.
