Demonstrative Communication

Demonstrative communication is the nonverbal communication part of any message. There are several forms; tone of voice, facial expression, posture, gestures, eye contact, physical space, personality, and can also include appearance. Nonverbal communication is a big part of the communication process and mastered to become effective. Words only state part of the message sent. So a person with superior demonstrative communication skills makes a superior communicator.

The tone of voice from either the sender or the receiver can determine the message sent. Humans process tone of voice and facial expressions in real time (Lui et al., 2012). Before the receiver can even decode the meaning of the words sent the tone of voice has already set the stage. Changing the volume, pitch, and speed will vary the meaning of the communication (Showry & Manasa, 2012). If a message is said softly it may mean it is a secret. If the message is said loudly, it may mean a discipline or a command. This makes tone of voice one of the most important demonstrative communications. Facial expressions transfer emotions such as anger, happiness, fear, interest, and so on. Most of these expressions are sent spontaneous and unconsciously (Showry & Manasa, 2012). Also facial expression as stated by Lui (2012) is processed in real time. Processed simultaneously tone of voice and facial expressions enhance the message sent. Tone of voice and facial expression need to support what is said. The phrase “Come on” could change dramatically with the tone of voice. Also couple that with the facial expressions, and the possibilities are limitless. If facial expressions do not match the tone of voice the meaning could be completely lost or confused.
