Alternate Lab – Week1
We will be using several tools throughout the labs that involve equipment and physical implementation of the wireless labs. The week 1 lab is to investigate various wireless tools, select the “best” and install it on a laptop or handhold device. Select tools that will do the following function:
1. Similar to Netstumbler. Identify WAP’s, capture the gps co-ordinate, and ideally identify as many of the following parameters for every WAP encountered.
a. SSID
b. Locked or unlocked
c. Encryption type
d. Signal strength
e. Frequency (2.4Ghz or 5 Ghz)
2. Using the above gps co-ordinates, plug them into Google earth and generate a map that shows each WAP and parameters
3. Identify (find) a Spectrum Analyzer that covers 802.11 frequencies and will measure active channels, usage (number of users), and can generate multiple views of the data.
As I started on this week’s Lab, I researched Wardriving, which is described at Wikipedia as “the act of searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks by a person in a moving vehicle, using a portable computer, smartphone or personal digital assistant”. Since there are ethical concerns with some folks using Wardriving to disrupt a network, many of the applications they discuss are no longer available, or limited in their uses. I decide to first go with Netstumbler. Netstumbler is described at their website http://www.netstumbler.com/ as “a tool for Windows that facilitates detection of Wireless LANs using the 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g WLAN standards. It runs on Microsoft Windows operating systems from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.”. Unfortunately, the version I got from the website wound up not being compatible or...
