Nucor Ethics

Ethics is not a new thing for businesses it is ongoing with business. When one opens a business they must think of the ethical questions which come with the business along with their business choices. Nucor Steel was brought up with an ethical issue when there was a sinkhole near their train tracks in Tuscaloosa (2013). The company then had many issues which had to be looked at to make sure they were doing what was right and ethical to keep their business going.

The company was named in The Tuscaloosa News as having a sink hole due to a “storm drainage line,” the line was said to be over 100 years old and made of “repurposed sections of riveted boiler plate” (2013). This brings about the ethical issue of if the pipe was made of repurposed sections what Nucor would do about this since it did make a sink hole. Also if the company should be responsible for the damages caused by the sink hole and if Nucor needs to dig up all of the pipe line which is made up of the repurposed material to keep from causing more sink holes.

The ethical decision should be that the company needs to replace the pipelines which are made of the repurposed material if there was a map showing where the pipes where laid to keep from creating more sink holes. The company should also be responsible for the damages which were caused by the sink hole. Nucor should also make sure any issues which could be caused in the future are planned for in advance so to not make it becomes a problem. The ethical decision would be if the company should or should not be responsible for the damages. Nucor Steel would lose business if it continued to not fix the sink holes and the pipeline which is made of repurposed material. The company would also have to look at the ethics clause to see if this was covered by the ethics clause.

The definition of ethics makes it hard to understand if the sink hole incident really is an ethical decision or not...
