Everyone has the ability to perceive emotions. Emotional intelligence is the heart working with one’s head. It’s a combination of emotion, cognition and intelligence that makes up ones emotional intelligence. Understanding emotional intelligence helps one solve issues and live life with effect. Emotional intelligence can be described as, "the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions” (Cherry, 2013). Understanding emotions involves understanding ones body language and facial expressions. When one understands these non-verbal signals the next step uses emotions for cognitive activity and thinking. What one reacts to and gives attention to be prioritized with the help of emotions. Managing these emotions while responding to others emotions is an important part of emotional intelligence. The understanding of emotional intelligence is important for every aspect of ones life. In ones home, emotional intelligence helps one be a better parent or role model. At work, this understanding allows one to be a better manager, employee, or co-worker. This also helps one create a better workplace environment. In ones personal life, emotional intelligence helps one be a better person.

There are differences between cognitive intelligence and emotional intelligence. Abilities, which include reasoning, logic, analization, and prioritization, are included in cognitive intelligence. This type of thinking doesn’t use any emotions or require people skills. Emotional intelligence allows one understand ones own emotion while understanding others. This information helps an individual sort out what would be best for themselves and everyone else.
