Improving a Management Process

Six Sigma is defined as a quality control approaches that emphasize a relentless pursuit of higher and lower cost. Six Sigma is a method of solving problems which is another form of the Scientific Method. It is based on DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) to develop a systematic way of working through problems. Mangers in any type of organization or business can use the roadmap to help improve the operations of the company (November2009). Six Sigma requires a major commitment from top management because Six Sigma involves a whole lot of changes throughout an organization. Many of Organization have adopted some type of form of the Six Sigma program in recent years.

The foundations of Six Sigma can be traced back through Quality Operating System, Continuous Improvement, and Total Quality Management. W. Edward Deming, know as the quality of quality movement, embraced his theories and modified them to help rebuild industries into world power (Grennguard 51). There is a lot of history behind what Motorola called Six Sigma in the mid 1980’s. One fact that is forgotten is that when Motorola started the process, they used plus and minus three standard deviations which was rejected by many companies. During the 1990's, they finally moved into the plus and minus six standard deviation that is used today. The four elements of quality management the employee had to focus on were involvement, focusing on the customer, benchmarking, and continuous improvement.

The employee must get involved in customer meaning that TQM requires participation in the quality control. The employee must focus on the customers. They need to find out what the customers want and then try to meet their needs as well as expectations. Benchmarking simply means finding out how other companies do something better than they do and try to improve in that area. A company should...
