The book begins by describing an insight the author gained on a Friday morning. The real example the author presented about the two repairmen, Sam and George, taught him a lesson about how important EQ is. The EQ Zen Master, George, demonstrates a great insight on how a person with high emotional intelligence can make simple life become unworldliness.

EQ is a combination of our ability to sense how aware we are of our own emotions and the emotions of others, and our ability to motivate ourselves and to motivate others both when times are good and bad. EQ can be divided into four quadrants, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. When it comes to determine someone’s success in the business world, EQ is at least as important as, or even more important than IQ and business/technical expertise.

In chapter 3, the author gives short descriptions for each of the four EQ quadrants and explains how they could be broken down into 20 EQ- sub categories.

Emotions are a vital part of the human condition, however, the level of emotion present is crucial and just the right amount can motivate us to act correctly. The goal of EQ training is to help us move in a direction to discover that balance. It is important for us to learn the techniques that can prevent us from letting too much emotion affect our business and personal relationships.

Self-Awareness is the most difficult, yet the most crucial part to improve our EQ. Self-Awareness includes awareness of emotions, self-evaluation, situation awareness, and self- confidence. The hardest part of Self-Awareness is to recognize our emotions that blindside us. We can start to recognize our problematic emotions as they are happening and even predict when they will happen before they actually do blindside us. Only then will we have a chance at changing the course of our emotional response. This is the major work of self-awareness training.
