1 Introduction

This report is aimed at critically evaluating the emerging tensions and potential challenges of putting the performance related pay into practice, with emphasis to the potential challenges that might be faced with the introduction of performance related pay for teachers in England. The study first analysed the history of performance related pay across countries and further evaluated factors affecting the design and management of performance related pay in the teaching profession. Subsequently, the advantages and disadvantages associated with implementing performance related pay in the teaching profession were further analysed. In addition, lessons from managing performance related pay in United States were analysed alongside with the potentials for the successful adoption of the policy in England. Conclusions and recommendations for the successful implementation of performance related pay in England were finally provided by the study.
