7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders -Group Summary of Learned Concepts

Tiffany Elam's contribution

The first concept was that “we see things not as they are, but as we are conditioned to see them” (Covey, S. R., 2010, pg. 2). This concept means that because something has happened previously in the past, it is expected to happen in the present and the future.

In the article “Imagery in Human Classical Conditioning,” the authors reviewed several case studies and found that images repeatedly presented to the participants influenced responses (1997). Covey, explains that when individuals are aware of their conditioning, they can create or retrain themselves to generate new responses. By generating new responses this is welcoming change which will allow for a new view on world.

The second concept is that change starts from within oneself.

Covey explicates that when change is made, there is a shift from the focus of skill, positive attitude, and personality traits. The focus is then placed on integrity, justice and patience (2010).

The third concept learned was that “our character is a collection of our habits and habits have a powerful role in our lives,” (pg. 2). Habits, according to Covey are knowledge, skill and desire.
