Diversity in the United States
Diversity in the United States has always been an issue in some
shape or form. It could range from race, gender, religion, or culture, and the way others
discriminate or are prejudice to others due to the difference of their selves. I now have a better
understanding on how to relate to others that I have not had in the past. I now understand why
so many people are migrating into the United States, they are wanting to have a better life for
their children and have the right of freedom. In many countries people are expected to belief
what the country tells them to believe. Once coming to the United States this is no longer an
issue they are able to believe what they want.
During this course I have learned some things about my race, ethnics,
and culture that I was unaware of or I should say blind to. For example white privilege refers to
the rights or immunities granted as a particular benefit or favor for being White. This advantage
exists unconsciously and is often invisible to white people who enjoy it (Ferber 2008). Whiteness
does carry privileges but I have never consciously thought of them, such things as in the
workforce. I will now often think did I get this job due to the color of my skin (race) or did I get the
job due to my education and experience.
Over the past years immigration has changed and shaped the
demographics of the United States. One of the great changes that were made to change the
demographics is the “Great Immigration” which started at the end of the Civil War in 1865 and
lasted until World War I, which began in 1914. Ships brought some 25 million people across the
Atlantic Ocean in search of economic opportunities in new industrial factories. There have been
