Cold War Ideology and Policies

During the war the United States and the Soviet Union were allies. Both of them had the same enemy, the Nazi’s. When the war was over the United States and the Soviet Union did not have the same enemy and they had different beliefs on how the world should be run. The United States and the Soviet Union became enemies when it was over. After the war the United States had an economy that was booming, a military that was massive, and the ability to produce an atomic bomb (Davidson, 2006). After the war the Soviet Union was basically destroyed. There was nothing left. The streets were dark and empty.

The actions and polices of the US’ Cold War affected international relations during the late 1940’s through the mid 1950’s. The U.S. feared communism and would go to great lengths to prevent it from coming over here. The U.S. was also willing to help other countries that were being threatened by communism. The Truman doctrine was created in 1947 to help Turkey and Greece resist communism after Great Britain announced they could no longer help them due to the post war economy of the country. The U.S. was determined not to allow the communist to take over Europe. In 1947 George Marshall invited all European nations to request assistance to rebuild their countries.
