Comparison in Factory Jungle, The Song of the Factory Worker and Old Man Pike

Poetry is a language spoken to express the thoughts that goes through a poets head. The words can express personal encounters in the workplace or they can be mere observations of the individuals that the work around. The comparison analysis will analyze the relationship between language and content while examining how the authors use the language to communicate a theme of a poem. The comparison analysis will also compare three poems with similar themes and then I will elaborate on the techniques used to enhance the emotion response from the reader.

Old Man Pike by David Budbill tells a story of an old man who walks a long distance to work so that he could have the leisure time to walk back home at night by himself in the dark. The poem is told in a second person point of view. The theme of the poem is coping with a job that the character does want so that he can have time alone on his journey back to his house. The poem states the character not believing in the local religion of work, but out of respect for his neighbors he agrees to it. This line informs the reader that the character prefers not to work but chose to work anyway. The metaphor saying, “In the dark and solitary amblings of his pleasure” (Budhill, 1996, p. 219). This metaphor describes the one and only reason Old Man Pike chooses to work away from home. The character enjoys solitude as many of people do. I enjoy going to work so I can have a little peace and quiet on my way to and from work.

The Song of the Factory Worker by Ruth Collins tells the story of an employee who wants to leave his or her place of work, however believes that if he or she attempts to do so he or she would be back. The theme of the poem is coping with a job that the character does not like. The poem is written in first person point of view.
