Types of Research Design:

1. Action Research Design

• In simple words, this type of research is called “learning by doing”. Researchers try to accomplish two objectives: to solve the identified problem and to scientifically study the system/process of doing it. It starts from knowing the problem, planning a solution, implementing it, and reflecting whether it was effective or not. It repeats again and again until a satisfactory result is achieved.

• Example: The study on the structuration of Internet-based collaborative work groups in community health

2. Causal Research Design

• This type of research focuses on how an existing, independent variable will affect an existing, dependent one. It utilizes the conditional statement “If X, then Y” when it comes to understanding different situations and usually answers the question “why”.

• Example: The study on the effects of changing the product design by a clothing company

3. Comparative Research Design

• As its name implies, this type of research is conducted by looking for differences and variety among two or more (naturally existing) groups through comparing them.

• Example: The study on the level of proficiency between DLSU students and ADMU students

4. Correlational Research Design

• This type of research tries to get predictions out of more than one variable that are said to be related to each other.

• Example: The study determining whether students who do well in class participation also do well in written exams

5. Descriptive Research Design

• Unlike Causal Research Design, this discusses the current qualities of a specific topic rather than the changes it might possible undergo if administered with new variables. It serves as a general overview of producing a more comprehensive study that will not only answer the questions “who”, “what”, “when”, “where” and “how”.
