General and Specific Course Objectives

Course Target:

This course is designed to meet the basic needs of students whose future contact with operations management may take a variety of forms. Given both the broad range of backgrounds and anticipated future career paths of the students, the course concentrates on providing an introduction to basic concepts of operations management, providing frameworks that can be used as a reference point in understanding unfamiliar operations management situations, overcoming common misconceptions about operations management, and showing how the effective management of operations is essential to improving customer service. Thus, the focus is on what a general manager should know about operations management.

General Course Objectives:

The student should understand the basic theories and techniques applicable to modern operations management. The aim is to expose the student to a wide range of operations management situations and activities, and to provide them with a basis on which to assess, evaluate, and recommend management actions regarding existing operations. The student will also be introduced to a framework for making longer-term decisions in the operations area.

Specific Course Objectives:

A. Provide students with an understanding of how different types of production processes operate in terms of their key characteristics, management tasks, organization and control.

B. Provide students with a basic set of tools and structures for handling four major classes of operating tasks: demand management, materials management (including inventory and purchasing), capacity planning, and work force scheduling and control.
