Finding Nemo

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory

1. Physiological

2. Safety

3. Love

4. Esteem

5. Self-actualization

The first three needs are easily met. He is well taken care of so the first need is met. He is safe and taken care of, so the second need is met and he is well loved, so the third need is met. The fourth and fifth needs are a little shaky. He has low esteem. His father is constantly telling him what he can’t do. So, he has little esteem and the need to prove his father wrong. His self-actualization is also lacking. He needs to prove to himself that he is capable of surviving on his own. His father has little faith in his son’s ability to swim and general capabilities to survive at the beginning of the movie. Throughout the move, especially towards the end the fourth and fifth needs are met.

Motivation

I think Nemo is motivated by his dads over protective nature. He wants to

Nemo is extrinsically motivated because he is motivated by external factors that would allow him to prove his father wrong and be accepted by the school group.

Marlin is intrinsically motivated because he is motivated to find and rescue his son because of positive internal feelings.

McClelland’s Need Theory

Need for Achievement- desire to accomplish something difficult

Need for Affiliation- desire to spend time in social relationships and activities

-Nemo wants to stay in school.
