Management Planning at McDonalds
I chose McDonalds for the subject of my management planning paper. McDonalds is a mostly franchised business that is worldwide. Some quick facts, according to McDonalds (2011):
Number of Global Restaurants:
More than 32,000
Number of Countries:
117
Number of worldwide employees:
1.7 million
Percentage of franchised restaurants around the world:
More than 75%
Chief Executive Officer:
Jim Skinner
According to McNamara, MBA, PhD (n.d.), “Planning is…considered to be one of the four major functions of management, along with organizing, leading and…controlling. …planning is identifying where you want to go, why you want to go there, how you will get there, what you need in order to get there and how you will know if you're there or not.”
During the planning process, as part of their strategy, McDonalds management places “…emphasis on driving customer traffic, menu innovation and compelling value, …dedication to value and variety…and the everyday affordability of the food and beverage options available across McDonald's menu, and as well as in 2010 “….build[ing] brand loyalty and enhanc[ing] the customer experience…” (Jim Skinner, CEO, McDonalds, 2010). McDonalds also plans for success by continually creating new promotions, for example, the Monopoly promotion and the introduction and addition of new menu items.
