Introduction The purpose of this essay is to review and communicate ideas, knowledge and theories that have been discussed on job satisfaction. It aims to define job satisfaction, summarize the main themes across the literature and pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses that lie within the literature. It also endeavors to link my personal experiences of job satisfaction to the theory of job satisfaction. The essay begins by defining job satisfaction across the literature, analyzing key definitions in chronological order. In the process of defining job satisfaction, this essay reveals the key themes that run across the literature on job satisfaction. Indeed, the essay continues by discussing several of the key themes involved including the relationship between job satisfaction and disposition, the relationship between job satisfaction and cultural influences and the relationship between job satisfaction and job performance. The essay also contains a reflective writing section, based on the literature review, in which my experiences of job satisfaction are related. Literature Review Definitions The term job satisfaction attracts a variety of definitions across the literature. Locke (1976, p.1304) defines it as “…a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experiences”. In other words, Locke views job satisfaction as an internal condition as a result of external factors. Similarly, Cranny, Smith and Stone (1992, p.1)
