ABSTRACT

In this paper, I will explain the difference between lobbying and bribery and the affects it had on the Salt Lake Olympic committee. In addition, I will also discuss the SLOC’s arguments to why they think their actions of the bribery do not fall under the definition of a legal bribe under the Foreign Corrupt Act. I will also include in this paper the proper punishment for the violations of the ethical and legal principles, and if the remedies that are in place should be limited to the expulsion of the members of the committee who violates those principles, and if the community as a whole should be held responsible for their actions.

In researching the bribery scandal regarding the SLOC, I have found many different articles to support my thoughts on how to remain ethical under the FCA, and the other committees that are involved in the scandals. Under the FCA, bribery is the illegal; under different meanings, it is also unethical for some companies. Bribery is the giving, offering, receiving, or soliciting of something with value. In addition, the influencing of an official in a government position, to take things of value for the support of certain issues that reflects a company. In addition, it can be the giving of a cash payment, with or without a written agreement in place proving that the bribe took place. On the other hand, lobbying is different in many ways that are small but important. According to the Merriam-Webster’s online Dictionary, lobbying means to promote project or secure the passage of a project by influencing public officials. In lobbying, you are not giving or receiving any gift of any kind. In addition, the practice and profession of one that is a lobbyist, is to influence decisions for special concerns with the legislators.
