Are There Good Reasons to Allow Infants to

Consume Electronic Media, such as Television?

Statement of Position:

In today’s world, going into a home without a television, computer or smart phone is extremely rare. Our society is beginning to be run by technology and media. This is something that shows in each new generation that arises. When thinking about how life was when you were a child or when I was child to how it is now, the comparisons are extremely substantial. Cell phones were not even in question until you reached high school when cell phones were useful for our parents to get ahold of us after practices, meetings, and social events; today, middle school students and even elementary school students are walking around with some of the latest technology of cell phones. Laptops, iPads, X-box and Playstation are found in almost every home across the country and being used by all ages. These changes affect the children of our society in ways most people do not even notice; therefore when thinking about if there are good reasons to allow infants to watch television or play on the computer, it brings up a lot of controversy.

While there are many points for each side of whether electronic media benefits or hurts a child, I have found it to be more damaging. Researching this topic has brought many valid points to the surface on both arguing sides; however, with all the evidence collected, it is more logical arguing how much more damaging the consumption of electronic media can be at a young age like infancy; therefore, my side of this debate is that there are not good reasons for infants to be consuming electronic media especially television.
