Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so all the information should be carefully considered before making a decision. One of the biggest advantages of breast-feeding over formula is that it is healthier and it provides the baby with more nutrients. Breast milk is constantly changing in its composition to meet the changing needs of the baby. It has the exact combination of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and sugars needed for the human infant at various stages of his growth.

Breast milk provides the baby with antibodies and immunities that are crucial for protecting it during the early stages of development. Breastfed children are half as likely to have any illness during the first year of life. Study after study now shows, for example, that babies who are not breastfed have higher rates of death, meningitis, childhood leukemia and other cancers. They are also at a higher risk for diabetes, respiratory illnesses, bacterial and viral infections, diarrheal diseases, otitis media, allergies, obesity, and developmental delays. Due to the anti-infective properties of breast milk, breastfed babies tend to have less incidence of or less pronounced symptoms of ear infections, respiratory illness, allergies, diarrhea, and vomiting.
