Final Research paper – Network Security

Networking and Telecommunication Management

30 May 2012

Network Security refers to any physical entity or logical program that helps preventing the network from the intruders. The network security concept is applied to all types of networks wired as well as wireless. There are very high chances that the wireless network will get tampered than the wired network as the intruder identity is much more difficult to trace in wireless network than wired network. The security is of two types, absolute security and secured access.1

The absolute security is achievable only when the PC or the laptop is out of any wired or wireless network. When the computer is stand-alone then it is obviously secured by any other intruder except it is used by false user.

The secured access to the PC is available if the PC is well managed by password security physically and by well-maintained firewalls virtually.

Network security is the activity of protecting a network for better usability, reliability, safety and integrity of the user’s data and the device. Today most of the security threads are spread over the internet. Viruses, worms, Trojan attacks, spyware, hacking, identity theft, denial of services, data interception and theft are few of the common threats.2

All these threats can be overcome by using effective measures. The network security consists of both hardware and software components. But the software components are more effective. The software components have to be updated and managed periodically. The software components include antivirus, firewalls, VPNs etc.2
