What is telecommuting?

According to Laureen Miles Brunelli (2013), telecommuting is to work from a certain location that is not the workplace, usually a home office or a coffee shop by electronically linking to the company. In telecommuting, employees save the time of driving back and forth from work. A telecommuting employee seems to be more productive since they work from the comfort of their home and work on their own time. Telecommuters also avoid work related stress since they don’t have to be in an office all day long.

A recent Reuters poll indicates that every 1 in five workers around the globe telecommute in a frequent manner and 10 percent of that workforce telecommutes from the comfort of their homes every day.

Since telecommuting is for the benefit of the employee and the company, most managers or authority figures fear the loss of control over employees. Managers are supposed to trust employees but other say they would like to be able to keep an eye on them while they work. The workforce and supervisors have to work harder to maintain relationships with fellow co-workers. Being isolated from the work place may cause a lot of problems such as not knowing what is recently going on within the company. Telecommuting isn’t for everyone and should be considered really deeply before actually doing it.
