PROVERS

Chapter 1

Vs. 1

From the opening of the book of proverb, there is a wisdom that is taught. King Solomon begins by acknowledging who he is, not his authority. He first states that he is the son of David. He could have easily put the latter first, being the king of Israel. He starts out, however, by revealing to readers who he really is—the son of David—and then his power. It could have been the standard introduction back then, but it truly gives a humble lesson. Therefore we too must recognize who we really are in any situation, especially when we become successful. Nevertheless, the son is advised in verses 15 and 16 to stay away from them all together. In our case, it could be for us to move to another department or change jobs. These verses go directly against peer pressure.

I had first thought that everyone was born with so called “common sense” or common knowledge, but these verses prove that it is far from the truth. We must be aware that we do not possess it, it was not innate, and crave for it. Then, until then, will we understand the fear of the Lord—which is bringing us in the path of humility—and find the knowledge...
