1. Manufacture of chocolate by exploitation of child labor in Africa

1) Children from poor families were kidnapped and forced to work for subsistence wages in dangerous facilities for cocoa farms on the West Africa.

2) Cote d’lvoire is the second largest cocoa producer. West African cocoa is included in chocolate such global companies like a Hershey bars, M&Ms, KitKats, Nestle.

3) Cote d’lvoire consists 43% of world’s total cocoa production.

2. Analysis.

According to discovering, 284,000 children from unhappy families were working in cocoa farms on the West Africa. They didn’t feel freedom because they were in exploitation like slavers. These children were abducted or sold by their parents because of poverty. And they hadn’t any choice apart from this because nobody protected them. They worked in awful condition and regularly were beaten by their owners. The world was in shock and people recognized what was happening before they buy their favorite chocolate. All media and people who really care about it started to set it back. For instance, ex-senators George Mitchell and Bob Dole tried to intervene by making self-imposed limit in 2005. Also United States court made a decision do not buy any chocolate to their wives in Valentine’s Day, which as we understand, is very profitable day in the year. Nowadays, many modern companies sell only fair-trade products. It is result of consortium of fair-trade organizations from different countries that attempted to change such situation in Africa.

3. Child slavery in Africa it is not only local, but global issue, which we have to solve. I think it is not enough to achieve a real goal. Of course it is great that many countries started to control manufactures and keep an eye on how and especially who is doing this hard work.
