The Cry Baby

I was walking slowly through the woods, enjoying the sunlight coming softly through the trees. It was a short-cut from my school to home, and I often walked the winding pathways. I turned towards home and spotted, through the trees, a large dark house hidden in the shadows of the forest. I knew I should be hurrying home but decided to have a quick look around the house. I was sure there were not any houses in the forest, but I was curious and just had to investigate.

The house was in complete darkness. Although scared, I decided to take a closer look. The house had a large porch along the front and huge windows covered by heavy curtains. I was now on the front porch and stood frozen near the front-door. I thought I could hear a soft crying noise but couldn’t see through any windows and thought I must be imagining it. I tried the front door to see if it opened. My hand was sweating as I slowly twisted the handle and the door opened with a loud creak! I stepped into a huge hallway all dark and dusty. I could still hear the soft crying. I listened hard…now all was quiet. I walked slowly down a long dark and dusty hall way listening hard for any sounds. It looked like people had once lived in the house and left quickly, there were dusty plates and cups on the dining table and newspapers scattered on the couch. Who would leave their belongings and just go? Suddenly I could definitely hear the sound of crying…like a small baby or kitten.

I listened hard trying to locate the sound. Was it behind the door at the end of the hallway, or up the wide dark stairway? I walked slowly towards the door at end of the hallway; I didn’t want to go up stairs. My legs were shaking but I kept going, I pushed the door hard, it creaked open to reveal a large dark kitchen, mice were on the bench tops their beady eyes shining. I could still hear the crying, but where was it coming from, I looked around the dirty kitchen but could not find anything. I...
