Determining Levels of Prevention

Resources: Ch. 8 of Human Services in Contemporary America and Appendix E

Post a 200- to 300-word response to the following: Analyze the scenarios in Appendix E and describe the level of prevention each scenario addresses. Do you think the prevention strategy used in the scenario is effective? If not, what would you do differently?

Scenario A’s situation is an effective one. I would use this preventative program for my own wife to help her rebuild her confidence in such a situation. Scenario A is a tertiary prevention effort. This category is indicated since she would have to both rehabilitate and return. I think that the husband should also be sent for service provision since his anger is a problem in this situation. Primary prevention is indicated in the second situation. This is because a dysfunction is being prevented through intervention, such as teen pregnancy. This situation could have been handled more successfully in a different way. Here, human services would have done well to raise funds to help the Planned Parenthood facility to remain open. This facility provides unlimited services which will be more effective than a limited facility will be. Secondary prevention is shown in the third situation. This is a situation in which they are trying to prevent hunger in the homeless population, intending to help them stay healthier. In my opinion, these preventative measures will be most effective in this instance. Bringing services directly to the homeless will be more effective than trying to provide transportation for the homeless to come to the service providers.
