Yukl & Heaton (2002) cover various theories and research about leadership techniques in formal organizations. Even though Yukl explains that he is going to focus on 20% of informative and related literature sources, he also provided a detailed analysis of the information in a clear manner. The information he provides is usually as academic texts but can also be used by practicing manager who want to implemented and learn leadership techniques. Every chapter covers particular leadership aspects, with a summary and discussion. Key definitions are highlighted, and there is a case study in the end of every chapter. Leadership in Organizations has a specific focus on managerial leadership in large companies and is an effort to bridge the difference between managers and academics. The approaches of the research are outlined regarding characteristics of leaders, followers, and when specific techniques should be implemented. The theories have been categorized into five different approaches of integrative, situational, trait, power-influence, and behaviour. Yuki examines every research theory in detail and explains their pros and cons, which provides the reader with a choice to select the method they find more suitable. Controversies about previous research are also summarised as depending on research methods that are weak. The author finishes with a detailed list of the ten more important functions of leadership for improving organisations and teamwork. Even though every chapter starts with a learning objectives list, the bias tends to appears towards academic audience, especially students, instead of practising managers. Gary Yuki definitely does provide a detailed review of all the different techniques used, citing examples as well as guidelines. Even though many readers can find this style to be somewhat over-directive, it can’t be denied that many readers are going to benefit from many of the points and techniques he explains. There...
