Network Rail has the mandate to operate, maintain and enhance Britain’s Railway Network. This involves some 25,000nr train journeys across 20,000 miles of track each day (Network Rail 2010). Network Rail is split into three distinct departments employing 37,000nr staff, Operations (& customer services), Infrastructure Investments and Maintenance.

The maintenance function however does not just maintain the infrastructure it also undertakes small scale renewals, on either a like-for-like basis or those that only involve minor design. In this short assignment I will look at a maintenance delivered project, assessing who the key stakeholders are, along with the sponsor, and then assessing the expected benefits of the project.

This investment project that I will be looking at is for the supply and installation of Remote Condition Monitoring (RCM) on points heating for the Manchester Piccadilly station limit area. The project will see the installation of Tri-control monitoring units that will monitor the air temperature, the temperature of the switch blade and the temperature of the points heating equipment.
