When businesses decide that it is time to implement new programs into their daily routine, there are many steps taken to develop the new system. The object of this project is to create a new information system within a structured time frame without going over budget. There are six steps in a system’s development life cycle(SDLC), but there are other models that can be used that have more than these six steps. Even with the extra steps in models like the waterfall model or the spiral model, the same purpose is being worked towards; to design and implement a new system to your company.

The steps for using the SDLC are clear cut and designed for the programmer to think about all parts of the task at hand in a chronological order. You must be satisfied with the first step before moving on to the others. The steps are as follows:

1. Evaluate the existing program to see where it has become insufficient.

2. The requirements for the new system are defined.

3. New program is designed.

4. The system is developed.

5. The system is implemented.

6. The new system has to be evaluated and maintained.

These steps are very important and should not be ignored. Money is a major concern when it comes to developing new systems, and making sure that the project stays within the company’s budget. The next system that will be discussed is the waterfall model.

The waterfall model is one that has been found to be obsolete now, but it is still well known. There are similarities to these two models, and we can see where the new models formed their basis. The waterfall model has more steps but most of them follow the same guidelines. The following steps are what make up the waterfall model:
