Communication Styles and the Business Communication Process
Communication styles and the business communication process are critical when having interpersonal conversations. Therefore, a recent interpersonal conversation that was conducted in a business setting will focus on what was communicated, who the communicators were, the styles, and why these styles were selected. The process will also include how using each of the different styles may affect the conversation, how the business setting affects the style of communication, and the elements of transactional communication. Last, how the business setting affects the transactional communication process will be discussed.

A recent interpersonal conversation occurred with a coworker in the Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs (NREA) Branch. The conversation revolved around how the Deputy, Comptroller wants employee’s who have traveled locally to submit vouchers for training reimbursements. Currently submissions for costs incurred have been submitted through the Defense Travel System (DTS). Both individuals agree that the most appropriate method for submitting documents for training reimbursements should be done through DTS. This system enables employees to be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses, including mileage, and training, and until recently this had not been a problem. However, the Deputy, Comptroller believes that costs incurred by employees for training should not be processed through DTS, but rather through two other programs. These programs are Wide Area Work Flow (WAWF), and Project Requests (PR) Builder.
Style
Maintaining a high level of self-awareness is the key to becoming an effective communicator. Therefore, it is important to understand what our personal communication style is so that we can make a “good” and lasting impression on those we come in contact with.
