Topic: Sugar Diabetes

General Purpose: To inform

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the dangers and causes of diabetes.

Central Idea: diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.

Preview: I will let the audience know of some causes and symptoms that I have experienced living with type 2 diabetes.

Organizational pattern: Topical

Introduction:

I. Diabetes is a common but dangerous disease among Americans today.

II. I have been living with diabetes about ten years now.

III. I have to take medicine everyday.

IV. You can have a limb amputated or die from this disease.

V. Today, I will give you some tips on how to live with diabetes.

Body

I. First, let’s look at the different types of diabetes.

1. Type 1 DM results from the body's failure to produce insulin, and currently requires the person to inject insulin or wear an insulin pump. This form was previously referred to as "insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus" (IDDM) or "juvenile diabetes".

2. Type 2 DM results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency. This form was previously referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or "adult-onset diabetes".

3. The third main form, gestational diabetes, occurs when pregnant women without a previous diagnosis of diabetes develop a high blood glucose level. It may precede development of type 2 DM.

II. Now let’s discuss some of the major dangers of the disease along with some symptoms.

1. Sudden loss of weight and appetite.

2. Dizziness

3. Frequent urination along with increased thirst.

4. Blurred vision

5. May even go blind

6. Loss of limbs

7. Death

III. Things we can do to live longer and normal with diabetes.
