Immigration Control

The citizens of the United States will never come to an agreement when it comes to

immigration control. The disagreement affects us in so many ways. The three main areas it

affects our country include illegal entry, governmental benefits, and rights. The government is

taking many steps to prevent illegal entry into our country. The government might not watch

who is leaving the country; however, they are watching who is coming into the country.

Many immigrants illegally cross the borders into the United States by many of the bordering states close to Mexico. Immigrants come by boat, tunnels, and tractor trailers to enter this country illegally. Countless illegitimate immigrants will pay to get in this country. “The current immigration bill, introduced by a group of senators known as the “Gang of Eight,” would provide a pathway to citizenship to about 11 million people illegally in the U.S. and create a new work-visa program. It also would require beefed-up border security and employment verification before steps to legalize undocumented [i.e., illegal] immigrants could kick in.” (American Immigration Control) Many states have set up several protocols and for immigrants caught in the states illegally. The government has set up strict regulation for illegal entry. In Gwinnett County, which is in the state of Georgia, the law enforcement has set up a department called “ICE.” “On January 12, 2009, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) began a 26-day surge at the jail to check all inmates for their immigration status. At the end of the 26 days, ICE had placed detainers on 914 foreign born inmates in order to begin deportation proceedings. These numbers revealed that 68 percent of our foreign born population at the jail is here illegally. Fifty-four percent of the 914 had a previous criminal history. The vast majority of those with...
