Section One

1. Explain the difference quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Are researchers required to provide in-text citations and a References page entry for all three? Why or why not?

These three ways of incorporating other writer’s work into your own writing differ according to the closeness of your writing to the source writing. When using quotations they must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source and they must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author. Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words and must be attributed to the original source.

2. What are three ways to avoid plagiarism? By Paraphrasing, Citing by following the document formatting guidelines used by your educational institution, and Referencing your work and including a reference page it will help you to avoid plagiarism. If you are still not sure you can consult your instructor on how to acknowledge the contributions of others thoughts.

3. What makes citing and referencing electronic sources difficult? What can one do to ensure one has done so correctly? The internet and other digital sources are widely used tools for research, but since they are still relatively new tools, various disciplines are still deciding the correct way to document electronic sources, and disciplines are constantly changing their minds as to what the most appropriate ways are. You should always consult the style manual on your resources for documenting sources in the disciplines page to determine the correct style.
