Alderete & Co. Strategic Plan

A business strategic plan could learn some valuable lessons from the airline industry. Before any commercial or military aircraft can take off the pilots must fill out a flight plan. The plan has three main sections. The first section addresses questions about the departure airport such as: how many passengers, how much cargo, how much take off fuel on board, take off and arrival time, planned cruising altitude, and current weather conditions.

The second section deals with the planned arrival airport. The pilots need to know how much fuel they will have remaining and the forecast weather conditions. The third sections deals with planning for alternate airports in case of bad weather or other emergencies at the arrival airport. We could use the same methodology to address our daily, weekly, or monthly business plans. The first section would address current conditions of our business. The second section would deal with our goals or where we want to be at the end of the day, week, or month. The last section would address alternate courses of action in case changes need to be made to our plan.
