This article explores issues related to the generation gap in five community-based telecenters in a developing country. The telecenters are located in different parts of Jamaica. The article presents a conceptual framework of the impact of intergenerational telecenter interactions. Findings from an empirical study show that intergenerational interactions are important. Social interaction is explored through the use of social networks and social identity theory and social representation theory. Generally, telecenters identifies with specific groups. However, the study reveals that with intergenerational interactions new identities are formed. The elderly and young develop different uses for telecenters. They do this by working together in different ways. The article is useful to make connections with how the elderly find comfort and tackle discomfort of telecenter use.

This article uses a quantitative research study to discuss findings of the effects of the digital divide effect on telecenter use in Malaysia. Malaysia is strongly encouraging the use of ICT with the citizens. However, the digital divide is extreme between the rural and urban population. In addition, the cost for telecommunications is out of reach for poorer rural communities. Malaysia’s goal is to achieve an ICT environment by the year 2020.
