Advice Related to Giving Praise

I. INTRODUCTION

A. It is almost certain that we have all had experience in giving and receiving praise. What is praise? Praise is telling someone that they did something well. It can be expressed out loud, in writing or through action.

B. Think back to the last time you were praised for something you accomplished. Give me one adjective for how it made you feel? All of those positive feelings demonstrate just how effective praise giving can be.

C. Speaking from personal experience, I know I perform better when my efforts are recognized. I feel accomplished when my hard work and commitment is commended by my boss, my co-worker, my teacher or even my loved one. When we practice giving praise, everyone wins.

Transition: For the next few minutes, I am going to talk about giving praise in the business environment, and how it leads to a productive and profitable business organization.

II. BODY

A. First, let’s discuss the importance of praise in the workplace.

1. Praise motivates excellent employee performance.

2. Employees that are praised feel more valuable to the organization.

3. Praise keeps employees encouraged when facing difficult tasks.

Transition: Now that we know why praise is important in business, let’s discuss the different ways to praise employee performance.

B. There are several ways you can acknowledge employee contributions at work. Choosing the correct method depends on the individual and their accomplishment.

1. Praise can be administered in private or in public.

2. Pay raises and gift giving can be very effective.

3. Giving an employee greater responsibility to demonstrate trust engages the employee.

Transition: Now that we’ve touched on how to praise in the work environment and why it is important, I will now discuss the benefits associated with effective praise giving at work.
